Embolic Protection

Safety and Efficacy of Protected Cardiac Intervention: Clinical Evidence for Sentinel Cerebral Embolic Protection

As the field of interventional cardiology has grown, so too has interest in mitigating severe adverse outcomes such as stroke. Unfortunately, the risk of stroke is increased by many underlying disease conditions (atrial fibrillation, patent foramen ovale, carotid artery disease and other vascular disease affecting brain perfusion, etc.), making clear differentiation between cardiac intervention-related cerebral infarction and the effect of other coexisting factors very difficult.

Need for Embolic Protection During Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation: An Interventionalist’s Perspective on Histopathology Findings

Over the past decade, transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) has become the treatment of choice for elderly patients with symptomatic severe aortic stenosis at high risk for death or complications with conventional surgical aortic valve replacement.1–4 Recent studies and clinical practice confirmed TAVI feasibility in patients with a lower risk profile who are typically younger and have a longer life expectancy.5 In multiple randomised trials comparing TAVI with surgical aortic valve replacement, clinical stroke rate was similar for the two st

Use of Embolic Protection Devices in Peripheral Interventions

Catheter-based vascular interventions continue to evolve as new devices continue to expand the capabilities of interventionalists and improve patient safety. The importance of athero-embolisation during vascular intervention has long been recognised.1 Embolic protection devices (EPDs) were developed to help prevent embolisation during endovascular procedures.

Embolic Protection

After having performed angioplasty in coronary and peripheral vascular disease with excellent results, carotid angioplasty was thought to be an opportunity to simplify the treatment of carotid stenosis. Up until then there was no apparent reason to protect patients against distal embolisation. With the development of carotid angioplasty and stenting, prevention of distal embolisation of arteriosclerotic debris and thrombus became a main focus of the intervention.
